TRISTAN—Together for RISc-V Technology and ApplicatioNs

Connecting the RISC-V ecosystem to the cloud

Karlsruhe, Germany, 18 March 2024 – In collaboration with its project partners, the aicas team has succeeded in achieving new results in the project “TRISTAN” (Together for RISc-V Technology and ApplicatioNs). aicas contributes to the EU-funded research project to further develop the European open-source RISC-V ecosystem. The project aims to strengthen the RISC-V architecture in Europe to drive competitiveness and enable agile innovation.

The project aims to boost Europe’s competitiveness by advancing RISC-V architecture, leveraging an open-source ecosystem to enhance innovation and reduce design barriers. It proposes a holistic approach, improving both design tools and software, to offer a streamlined, secure, and transparent alternative to commercial processors.

aicas is part of the German TRISTAN consortium, that focuses on the automotive industry and mobility as one of the core applications of the “Microelectronics” Framework Program and the “High-Tech Strategy 2025”. Within the subproject “Connecting the RISC-V ecosystem to the cloud”, aicas adds to the project its expertise in connecting embedded devices to the cloud and provide a cloud control center for remote device management and monitoring, as well as to improve data extraction and evaluation.

TRISTAN RISC-V Automotive Connectivity

aicas’ role in the project is to contribute software components for embedded devices and the cloud, and to design an architecture that ensures all components have the required functionality and interfaces. In collaboration with its project partners, the concept and the system architecture have now been successfully completed. The work package contained determining the technical architecture of the sub-project, defining interfaces to other parts of TRISTAN, and ensuring that the necessary system requirements are met by the components.

The TRISTAN demonstrator leverages a Linux-run FPGA with aicas’ cloud clients on RISC-V, proving its commercial potential. It enables secure cloud data transmission for vehicle monitoring and control. A cloud control center based on aicas’ Edge Device Portal (EDP) product provides centralized fleet management, while facilitating seamless remote maintenance and configuration, highlighting the scalability and security of RISC-V technology.

“As one of our project results, status information can be read out and evaluated centrally in the cloud, as it is necessary for applications such as fleet management of vehicles and digital twins. The current project success proves the value of developing open-source ecosystems to facilitate future innovation based on common standards and reduce development costs,” says Dr. Tianhai Liu, project lead at aicas.

About TRISTAN

The three-year project TRISTAN (“Together for RISc-V Technology and ApplicatioNs”) is part of the European Commission’s strategy to support the digital transformation of all economic and societal sectors. This transformation includes the development of new semiconductor components such as processors, as these are considered essential for retaining technological and digital sovereignty.

The TRISTAN consortium consists of 46 partners from industry (both large companies and SMEs), research institutes, universities, and RISC-V-related European industry associations. As a project partner, aicas is part of a renowned competence group along with semiconductor manufacturers and providers of specialized solutions for software toolchains and system software such as NXP, Infineon, Bosch, Thales, Siemens.
