Dr. James J. Hunt

Co-Founder, CEO and CTO

Dr. James J. Hunt and his co-founders strongly believed that embedded systems would flourish in the heart of German industry. In 2001, when Silicon Valley was just experiencing the DOTCOM bust, they founded aicas. Their boldness has paid off: aicas evolved into a major player in the world of embedded and connected solutions. Over the years, James has expanded his vision for aicas to revolutionize the way embedded systems are programmed and managed. He looks back on more than 30 years of software experience, from wafer-scale CAD tools to realtime safety-critical embedded systems.

James has a BS in computer science and physics from Yale University, an MA in computer science from Boston University, and a PhD in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe. He spent several years as a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory where he developed CAD software for restructurable wafer-scale integrated circuits (RVLSI) and a parallel Lisp system for signal processing. He also contributed to the latest standards for software safety certification in avionics.

James is a prominent figure in the technology industry, widely recognized for his expertise in realtime systems, distributed computing, and programming languages.

A key focus of the management team is to drive innovation.

As President and COO of aicas, Johannes M. Biermann has a clear vision: to scale the company in order to take full advantage of aicas’ technological expertise in the embedded sector. One significant milestone illustrates his success: in spring 2022, aicas announced that its software solutions now connect more than 25 million embedded edge devices to the cloud. He is also driving aicas to be firmly integrated into the fast-paced embedded tech ecosystem, engaging with senior leaders of customers and partners to identify and capture value through go-to-market and technology collaboration.

Johannes possesses extensive leadership experience in transforming organizations to reach for more and enabling their teams to achieve sustainable business success. He previously held leadership roles at Hewlett Packard, Palo Alto and Roseville, California, as well as at Siemens AG in Munich, Germany. His professional tenure of almost 30 years in technology markets covers corporate strategy, management consulting, product management, marketing, and operational roles.

Johannes’ professional and pro bono affiliations include the American Council on Germany (ACG) where he served as the director of the San Francisco Eric M. Warburg Chapter for over ten years. He also was an advisory board member of the Institute of European Studies (IES) at the University of California in Berkeley, as well as member of the German American Business Association (GABA), Northern California, and the American Chamber of Commerce Germany in Berlin.
