NetSilicon Partners with aicas to Provide JVM Technology for Embedded Devices
- Partnership increases designers' productivity and makes aftermarket customization easier -
Dortmund/Nrnberg, February 18th 2004.
NetSilicon, a division of Digi International (NASDAQ: DGII), today
announced the availability of aicas' JamaicaVM realtime Java Virtual
Machine (JVM) on its leading line of NET+ARM microprocessors and
NET+Works software development suites. aicas' JamaicaVM is the
leading JVM technology for embedded realtime devices and provides
maximum software development flexibility for complex embedded designs.
"To lower costs and speed development, manufacturers are seeking a more
open, standards-based development environment like Java technology," said
Tim Counihan, vice president of marketing, NetSilicon. "Because the Java
language is easy to use and learn, development cycles are shortened and
costs are decreased. The Java platform has also achieved a high level of
maturity. This provides device manufacturers a long product lifespan and
simplifies support and maintenance issues. Java also enables device OEMs
to provide aftermarket customization through their VAR channels or by end
users."
JamaicaVM is available for all of NetSilicon's current NET+ARM processors,
and will be available for the NetSilicon NS9750 in March. NetSilicon's ARM-
9 based NS9750 processor is the highest performance, most integrated
NET+ARM processor available and is supported by NetSilicon's royalty-free
NET+Works development tool suite and networking software.
"Our NET+Works software suite makes it easier for companies to future proof
products by providing a seamless migration path across our lines of
NetSilicon processors and Digi device server products," Counihan added.
"aicas' JamaicaVM strengthens that value. It adds a small, fast, realtime
JVM on top of our NET+Works development tool package and makes it easier
for customers to implement intelligent device networking."
"Our JamaicaVM is a natural fit within NetSilicon's NET+Works embedded
development tool suite and adds to the company's ability to make device
networking easy," said Dr. Fridtjof Siebert, director of development,
aicas. "Our Java software provides NetSilicon end users increased
productivity, high reliability, safe execution, and easy code reuse and
encapsulation. We are extremely pleased to provide a Java development
environment for NetSilicon's leading development tool suite."
NetSilicon's integrated approach of the NET+Works development tool suite
helps customers speed time to market, reduce product unit costs, save
engineering resources, and reduce design risk. The NET+Works software
solution helps companies to implement embedded device networking by
eliminating the burden of software sourcing, integration, and maintenance.
The package allows customers to focus on applications and provides a
constantly improving migration path for future device networking needs.

About aicas GmbH
aicas provides Java technology for realtime and safety critical embedded
applications. The realtime Java implementation JamaicaVM uses the latest
runtime system technology to combine deterministic execution with highest
runtime performance. This provides an ideal development environment for
demanding applications in areas such as industrial automation, aerospace,
military, and telecommunication. aicas was founded in 2001 as a spin off of
the FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik and the University of Karlsruhe. aicas
headquarters are located in Karlsruhe, Germany. For more information on
aicas, see www.aicas.com.
About JamaicaVM
JamaicaVM is a Java implementation for deeply embedded and time critical
systems. JamaicaVM is based on an advanced realtime memory management
technology (garbage collection) enabling the use of Java technology even
for time and safety critical applications. Tools, such as the Jamaica
Compiler and Builder, optimize the runtime performance and memory demand
and provide for the analysis of the realtime behavior of Java applications.
