JamaicaVM for VxWorks

Karlsruhe, 19. July 2002.

JamaicaVM Version 1.05 of aicas GmbH in Karlsruhe, Germany, is available for WindRiver's realtime operating system VxWorks Version 5.4.2. JamaicaVM enables the use of Java Technology in realtime applications. The currently supported target architectures include PowerPC, x86, StrongARM and NEC v850. The supported development platforms are Linux and Windows.

The VXWork-port of JamaicaVM supports native threads and native inter-process communication and offers a runtime system for hard realtime applications through the use of JamaicaVM's realtime garbage collection technology. JamaicaVM is the only available Java implementation that provides hard realtime support for the full Java language.

The application developer creates the Java code on the host system, he can make use of the extensive Java class libraries available. The Java application will then be converted into an executable object file for the target system (VxWorks/PowerPC). The developer can chose between compact interpreted bytecode instructions and efficient optimized machine code generated by the Jamaica compiler. The resulting application can be linked statically with the VxWorks operating system or added into a running system by the dynamic linker via a network connection.

The support for additional target architectures under VxWorks and an adaption of the graphical library AWT for VxWorks is currently being performed by aicas.

About aicas GmbH

The aicas GmbH was founded in March of 2001. It was spun-off from the FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik and the University of Karlsruhe (Institut fr Programmstrukturen und Datenorganisation). The goal of the aicas GmbH is to bring the newest software development methodologies to embedded and time critical control systems.

About JamaicaVM

JamaicaVM is a Java implementation for the application in deeply embedded and time-critical systems. JamaicaVM is based on a new, realtime memory management technology (garbage collection), that enables the application of Java technology even in time- and safety-critical applications. Tools such as the Jamaica Compiler and Builder optimize the runtime performance and memory demand and permit the analysis of the realtime behaviour of Java applications.
