SPS 2001: AWT and a 16 Bit Implementation for Realtime Capable Java

acias GmbH debuted AWT, a graphics library, for Jamaica. Jamaica is an implementation of Java, which is capable of meeting the requirements of hard realtime systems. The next beta release, 1.0.3 scheduled for January, will include AWT. With this extension, Jamaica can address the needs of embedded systems with integrated displays. In keeping with its principle strategy of enabling the use of the entire Java language for realtime capable coding, aicas uses the AWT specification from JDK 1.1.8 as the bases of the AWT implementation in Jamaica, as opposed to a simpler, but incompatible graphics library such as kAWT. An AWT implementation for Jamaica makes it possible to develop a graphics based applications on the desktop and then transport it to an embedded system, requiring hard realtime guarantees, without modification. AWT has been a part of Java from its initial release.

For the first time, acias demonstrated Jamaica for a 16 bit system. Many interested visitors had the opportunity of seeing Jamaica run under the realtime operating system Euros on a 16 bit Infineon C-167 processor. Although Jamaica runs well on Linux and Solaris machines, its advantages of deterministic garbage collection and fragmentation free memory management are most useful on a realtime operating system like Euros.

The presentation of Jamaica on the DIL/NetPC from SSV peaked the interest of stand visitors as well. DIL/NetPC is a complete PC packed in a module the size of a memory card. Flexibility of application is insured through the use of Linux as it operating system.
