Before using this software, read the license files carefully, which
explain your rights and duties when using this product.  If you do not
want to accept the license, please remove all Jamaica files from your
system.  The license files include the Jamaica Evaluation Licence
Agreement and third party licenses.  They are available in the folder
<jamaica-home>/licenses after installation of Jamaica.

Although the information herein is provided with good faith, the
supplier gives neither warranty nor guarantee that the information is
correct or that the results described are obtainable under end-user
conditions.

System Requirements
-------------------

  - Linux kernel 2.6 or later
  - x86 64-bit CPU
  - gcc 4.1 or later installed and in PATH
  - glibc 2.5 or later
  - GNU tar or rpm 4.6 or later (for installing JamaicaVM)
  - Apache Ant 1.7.0 or later or GNU Make 3.79 or later (for building examples)
  - JDK 1.6 (if Apache Ant or the Jamaica ThreadMonitor tool are used)

JamaicaVM versions for earlier gcc and glibc versions can be provided
on request.  JamaicaVM requires libc version 6 or later.

For the multicore VM a Linux kernel 2.6.19 or later is recommended.

Additional development tools are needed depending on whether JamaicaVM
provides graphics support for X11 (which is the default).  On Linux
systems based on Redhat, JamaicaVM may be installed from the rpm
package; missing packages will be identified automatically.  On all
other Linux systems, the tar.gz package must be used, and missing
packages installed manually.


Packages Needed on Debian-Based Linux Systems

   JamaicaVM with graphics support:
     libx11-dev libxext-dev libxi-dev libxtst-dev

Use 'sudo apt-get install <package>{ <package>}' to install one or
more packages.


Packages Needed on Redhat-Based Linux Systems (Centos, Fedora)

  All JamaicaVM configurations:
    gcc
  JamaicaVM with graphics support:
    libX11-devel libXext-devel libXi-devel libXtst-devel

Use 'sudo yum install <package>{ <package>}' to install one or more
packages.


Packages Needed on SUSE-Based Linux Systems

  All JamaicaVM configurations:
    gcc
  JamaicaVM with graphics support:
    xorg-x11-devel

Use 'sudo zypper install <package>{ <package>}' to install one or more
packages.


Files Overview
--------------

The following files are provided with a release of JamaicaVM Tools.

User manual:
  jamaicavm_manual.pdf
Configuration information:
  Jamaica-<version>-<build>[-<features>]-<host>[-<target>].info
Package file:
  Jamaica-<version>-<build>[-<features>]-<host>[-<target>].<suffix>

Jamaica license keys (except for the Personal Edition):
  jamaica.aicas_key

The precise names of these files depend on the Jamaica version, build
number and configuration.  Configurations are available for a range of
host and target platforms, and some platforms support additional
features such as special graphics systems.  Graphics support for the
platform's standard graphics system is normally provided by default.

Installation
------------

For instructions on unpacking and installing JamaicaVM Tools, see the
Getting Started chapter in the user manual 'jamaicavm_manual.pdf'
(Chapter 2).  There, a short tutorial on using the tools is provided
as well.

The user manual provided in the download area is the same as the
printed version.  For the latest version, and for the release notes,
see the doc folder in your JamaicaVM Tools installation.
